Western Australia backs AIBS accreditation as pathway to building surveyor registration

The Australian Institute of Building Surveyors (AIBS) has welcomed the Western Australian Government's decision to formally recognise AIBS Accreditation as a pathway to registration for building surveyors, marking a significant milestone for the profession and the culmination of sustained advocacy by the Institute.
The recognition, now published on the Western Australian Government website, acknowledges the strength and rigour of AIBS's national accreditation framework and provides greater certainty for building surveyors seeking registration in the state.
The decision is an important step towards greater consistency in building surveyor registration across Australia, reinforcing AIBS's role as the leading professional body advocating for higher standards, greater workforce mobility and improved consumer outcomes.
AIBS Chief Executive Officer, Sid Gokani, said the outcome was a major achievement for both the Institute and the profession.
"This recognition is the result of a long period of constructive engagement with Western Australia's registration authority and government stakeholders, and demonstrates their confidence in AIBS Accreditation and the high professional standards it represents," Mr Gokani said.
"Building surveyors play a critical role in protecting public safety and ensuring buildings comply with Australia's regulatory framework. By recognising AIBS Accreditation as a pathway to registration, Western Australia is supporting a system that promotes competence, accountability and consistency."
The recognition builds on longstanding national confidence in AIBS Accreditation. Queensland, South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory have recognised AIBS Accreditation within their registration pathways, while Victoria formally recognised AIBS Accreditation as a pathway to registration in 2024. Western Australia's decision further strengthens the accreditation's national standing and supports greater consistency across jurisdictions.
AIBS has long advocated for greater consistency in building surveyor registration across Australia. Recognition of AIBS Accreditation by multiple jurisdictions helps reduce unnecessary barriers for qualified professionals while maintaining rigorous standards of competence, accountability and public protection.
AIBS Vice President and Western Australia Director, Richard Attiwell, said the recognition was a positive outcome for both the profession and the broader building industry.
