Fundamentals of Assessing, Inspecting and Commissioning Fire Safety Systems for Compliance with the National Construction Code

This training session will review all aspects of the installed fire systems, including; onsite pumps and location, combined sprinkler and hydrant systems, water sources including fire and street hydrants and the impacts that these have on water supply to enable fire service attendance. 

A practical approach is to be deployed showing the design and mechanical aspects on inspecting and certification of these systems under relevant Australian Standards. 

This training session is well suited to building surveyors either in the private building surveyors or local governments who deal with all classification types of buildings that require active fire safety systems to be installed. No matter if you have only basic knowledge of inspecting fire safety systems to be installed or a senior building surveyor with many years of experience, this training event will be for you. 

This training session will be delivered in three parts;

  1. Built Environment Branch, Department of Fire & Emergency Services requirements during the building assessment/certification stage.
  2. Inspection of Fire Safety Systems with real case examples, including what fire authorities look for when attending fires.
  3. Design and Installation of fire safety systems in residential & commercial buildings requiring active fire safety systems.

Relevant NCC requirements and referenced Australian Standards including, but not limited to the following will be reviewed;

  • Part E of Vol. One of the NCC
  • AS 2419.1 Fire hydrant installations System design, installation and commissioning 
  • AS 2441 Installation of fire hose reels
  • AS 2444 Portable fire extinguishers and fire blankets
  • AS 2118 Part 1 Automatic fire sprinkler systems 
  • AS 2118 Part 4 Sprinkler protection for accommodation buildings not exceeding four storeys in height
  • AS 2118 Part 6 Combined sprinkler and hydrant systems in multi-storey buildings
  • AS 1851 Maintenance of fire protection systems and equipment

A practical approach is to be deployed showing the design and mechanical aspects of inspecting and certifying these systems to enable final approval/occupation to occur.

All this and more will be covered in this not to be missed session for building surveyors and allied professionals alike who deal with assessing buildings that require active fire safety systems to be installed.

About the Speakers:


Gavin Maund

Gavin commenced with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services of Western Australia (FESA at the time) as a trainee firefighter in April 2002 and posted to Perth Fire Station.  He is a breathing apparatus and internal fire-fighting trainer and assessor and rostered as an on-call Fire Investigator Officer. For the past 2 years he has been employed as the Built Environment Senior Fire Engineer and holds a Master’s in Fire Engineering. He is passionate about protecting and empowering firefighters and building occupants.

Gary Nelson

Gary has work within DFES for 38 years, starting in 1981 as an Extinguish & Hose Serviceman, moving into the Fire Prevention Branch in 1988 as a Fire Safety Plan Assessor followed by a number of years as a Fire Safety Inspector. In the following years Gary has moved up the pathway ladder to the role of Senior Building Fire Safety Officer and is currently the Acting Plans Assessment Manager with the Built Environment Branch, he also is a rostered on-call Building Fire Safety Officer.

Amy Seppelt 

Amy Seppelt is the Lead Fire Safety Engineer with the Community Safety & Resilience Department for the South Australian Metropolitan Fire Services. Amy holds a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering and a Masters in Fire Safety Engineering and has been with the Metropolitan Fire Service since 2005. 

Amy's primary role is to provide high-level specialist expertise on engineering and technical Matters to ensure the provision of optimum standards of fire safety in the built environment for both the community and fire fighters in South Australia. 

Amy has had on a number of State and National committees, including the Building Advisory Committee and Building Regulations Assessment Commission in South Australia, as well as a number of committees for AFAC - The Australian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council. 

Prior to joining the MFS, Amy was a volunteer fire fighter with the Country Fire Service for 6 years in an Urban-Rural brigade, with specialist training and experience in structural fire fighting, road crash and heavy vehicle rescue, hazardous materials and confined space rescue. 

 

Nigel Curwen

Nigel has 20 years' experience in the Emergency Services sector. Prior to making the career shift to firefighting with the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB), Nigel was a Sergeant with Victorian Police. 

Nigel is currently and Acting Station Officer within the Fire Safety Department, where he has assisted in setting up the Cladding Project Team, assisting Victorian regulators deal with the cladding issue and providing valuable input into informing the Brigades operational response. 

Nigel has extensive experience in complex investigations, building construction and fire fighting structure fires.

Cancellation Policy: Refunds for registrations should be provided in writing to [email protected] as outlined below and calculated from the first day of training
 More than 30 days - Full refund
 Between 7 and 30 days - 50% refund
 Less than 7 days - No refund
Participants may transfer their registration to another training session up to one (1) working day prior to the commencement of the training day without loss of funds.
Payment Policy: Payment is required PRIOR to attending the event.
Minimum numbers: For all AIBS training events, minimum numbers must be met prior to the date to proceed
Early Bird Pricing: Early Bird pricing is available (where applicable) to full AIBS members and Associate members only. Payment is required immediately upon registration, or must be finalised up to four (4) weeks before the event date. Failure to pay by this date will result in a reissue of the event invoice for applicable registrations at the full AIBS member rate.
