RE: Perth / Peel Region COVID-19 Restrictions

Further to our advice to members yesterday morning related to the impact of COVID-19 restrictions, we have been advised that the State of Emergency and Public Health State of Emergency declarations issued on 28 June 2021 have been updated with respect to the definition of Essential Workers.

It is now much clearer that building surveyors are Essential Workers who fall into one of the following categories:

  • Government or local government services (whether provided by government, local government or outsourced) determined to be essential by the relevant Chief Executive Officer; and
  • Building, maintenance or construction services; and
  • Commercial operations that supply goods or services necessary to support any business activity that may be carried out in accordance with these directions.

It is also possible that consulting building surveying services might be covered in that; organisations that provide urgent services necessary for the health and safety of any person, animal or premises; (e.g.: the performance of emergency plumbing services, Centrelink services and foodbanks) are also defined as essential workers.

Members may need to consider establishing plans for persons who must continue to work in an office rather than from home as well as plans related to the conduct of work on remote worksites.

It is imperative that members ensure that they do all they can to support the efforts that the West Australian government and the broader construction industry are making to minimise the impact of COVID-19 on the community and the economy of Western Australia. If you are involved in moving between multiple worksites, your role in prevention of spread is particularly vital.

We will continue to monitor the situation and update you as and when we are able. Please ensure that you keep yourself informed of any changes in this situation as we may not be able to respond immediately when things do change.
