All this and more will be covered in this not to be missed session for building surveyors and allied professionals alike who deal with the assessment of buildings in bushfire prone areas.

This session to include:

  • Changes to AS 3959.
  • Site Assessment changes - including slope and vegetation aspects.
  • Construction Requirements - specific changes to be introduced to the construction of buildings including lower BAL requirements.
  • Changes to the NCC 2019 that incorporate AS 3959. 
  • New Verification Method. How to use the new verification method for bushfire, utilising a simple and complex method. This includes the adoption of a 10% chance of ignition and acceptable probable exceedance lebel depending on the class of building being designed. 
  • Real fire weather examples to be explored within the jurisdiction. 
  • The relationship between planning and building to be discussed. 
  • States Planning Scheme - how the changes to AS3959 and the implementation of the new Verification Method will impact planning scheme provisions will be explored. 

What is the building surveyors role in the certification phase for the assessment of buildings in bushfire areas? This session will detail all changes that a building surveyor should know when assessing/certifying buildings in bushfire areas. A not to be missed training event for building surveyors and allied professionals alike to be fully aware and updated on the proposed changes to the NCC 2019 and AS 3959 including the new Bushfire Verification Method

About the Speaker:  Grahame Douglas

Grahame began his interest in bushfire matters in the late 1980's and was appointed to represent environmental interests on the Bush Fire Council and in 1993 was appointed to the Bush Fire Coordination Committee. In 1996, Grahame accepted a position as Environment Officer within the then Department of Bush Fire Services and held a number of positions including Manager, Planning and Environment. 

Grahame has worked with the NSW Rural Fire Service in the area of community safety for more than 15 years and was responsible for developing the legislative provisions and policy relating to bush fire risk management planning, development control for bushfire prone areas, environmental impact of hazard reduction activities. He was the principal author of Planning for Bushfire Protection in 2001 and in 2006 and currently participates in the review of AS3959 Construction in Bushfire Prone Areas. Grahame now supports the University of Western Sydney in the Graduate Diploma in Bush Fire Design program and the University of Technology Planning for Bushfire Short Course whilst completing his PhD in bushfire weather and fire behaviour.

Cancellation Policy: Refunds for registrations should be provided in writing to [email protected] as outlined below and calculated from the first day of training
 More than 30 days - Full refund
 Between 7 and 30 days - 50% refund
 Less than 7 days - No refund
Participants may transfer their registration to another training session up to one (1) working day prior to the commencement of the training day without loss of funds.
Payment Policy: Payment is required PRIOR to attending the event.
Minimum numbers: For all AIBS training events, minimum numbers must be met prior to the date to proceed
Early Bird Pricing: Early Bird pricing is available (where applicable) to full AIBS members and Associate members only. Payment is required immediately upon registration, or must be finalised up to four (4) weeks before the event date. Failure to pay by this date will result in a reissue of the event invoice for applicable registrations at the full AIBS member rate.
No extensions to this period will be provided as the prices are automatically calculated into the event management and registration system.
