AIBS CPD Program

The AIBS is committed to a national program of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for all its Members and Accredited persons. CPD is “the systematic maintenance, improvement and broadening of knowledge and skill and the development of personal qualities necessary for the competent execution of professional and technical duties”. CPD is particularly important for Building Surveyors as their role involves having current knowledge of legislation, regulations and standards each of which is constantly changing.

The AIBS recommends 30 points of CPD per annum for all Members, and compliance with the AIBS CPD Program, including meeting the recommended number of points, is a requirement for AIBS Accreditation.

Further information regarding Continuous Professional Development can be found in the AIBS CPD Program.

Please note, the AIBS recommends all Members (whether they are accredited or not) should aim to achieve the Institute CPD standard:

  • A minimum of 75 points over the triennium
  • A minimum of 15 points in any one year

Continued Reduction in CPD Points

Due to the disruption and restrictions in various jurisdictions caused by COVID-19, at their meeting held on 12 August 2021, the Board considered and approved a reduction in CPD requirements to assist members during this challenging period.

At the Board meeting held on 12 April 2023, the Board confirmed the current CPD point requirements listed below will remain applicable until 31 December 2023.

Therefore, the period of the CPD reduction will be from 1 August 2021 to 31 December 2023. i.e. any CPD returns due during this time will only require 15 CPD points to be achieved.

The required 15 CPD Points must be achieved as per the following:
A minimum of 10 CPD Points will be required to be either Type A or Type B (no change to now)
The remaining 5 points may be achieved through Type C, D or E points
The number of points required for a member’s triennium will be amended from 90 to 75 to reflect this change and the requirement for Type A & B points over the triennium reduced from 45 to 40.

Ongoing professional development is essential to the crucial role of building surveyors in protecting the public and the buildings in which we work, live and play.
