About this Event

AIBS is pleased to announce an in-depth seminar curated to address select issues pertaining to timber construction which are at the forefront of Western Australian Building Surveying.  This event will include presentations from the following industry experts:

‘Inspection and certification of timber for house construction’ and ‘Tie-Down & Bracing for Houses’ presented by Assoc. Professor Geoff Boughton

‘Building Commission “Sticks on Bricks” Audit Findings’ presented by Allan Shiell, Audit Manager, WA Building Commission.

NCC 2016 Mid-Rise Provisions in Review’, ‘Fire Engineering  Approach’ and ‘Practical Implementation’ presented by Boris Iskra and Paul England

AIBS has commissioned Assoc. Professor Geoff Boughton to develop a seminar on Tie-down and Bracing for Houses to provide WA Building Surveyors with a deeper knowledge on this topic.
Geoff will also present a seminar on Inspection and Certification of Timber for House Construction.

 ‘Inspection and certification of timber for house construction’ will provide information on the inspection, certification and installation of timber products and systems in houses.  The presentation will include:
•              Relevant Australian Standards for the specification of timber used in the design and construction of housing;
•              Background information on timber products – manufacture, grading and treatment; and tips for inspecting timber for compliance;
•              Prefabricated timber trusses and wall frames;
•              Inspection of timber after exposure to weather during construction – evaluating fitness-for-purpose; and
•              Guidance on options for the rectification of timber elements affected by construction issues.

‘Tie-Down & Bracing for Houses’ is an in-depth two hour presentation which will cover inspection, certification and installation of tie-downs and bracing appropriate for timber frame and masonry wall houses with stick-built and truss frame roofs. The presentation will include:
•              Wind loads on housing, and wind forces to be resisted by bracing and tie-downs;
•              Wind classifications, why and how;
•              AS 1684 limitations
•              Suitable bracing systems for timber-framed houses;
•              Tie-down systems and details for truss, non-coupled and stick built roofs; and
•              Inspection challenges.

Presented by Allan Shiell, ‘Building Commission “Sticks on Bricks” Audit Findings' will cover the following key areas relating to Building Surveyors in the state:

•              Current audit volume status and common compliance findings update
•              The audit plan for this year and beyond
•              The minimum levels of documentation that should be relied upon during design assessment

The final three sessions of the seminar by Paul England and Boris Iskra, ‘NCC 2016 Mid-Rise Provisions in Review’, ‘Fire Engineering  Approach’ and ‘Practical Implementation’ will provide an opportunity to refresh your knowledge of the background to the 2016 Mid-rise Timber Buildings provision changes for Class 2, 3 and 5 Buildings. These presentations will cover the fire engineering design brief assumptions, data requirements and performance benchmarks necessary to demonstrate the adequacy of mid-rise timber construction.

This seminar will provide those Building Surveyors who are responsible for inspection of mid-rise timber construction projects with key knowledge necessary to ensure compliance is achieved as well as those responsible for assessment of such proposals with the tools needed to confidently tackle these proposals.

This will be an important session for anyone involved in the inspection or approval of timber framed buildings and also those that may become involved in the assessment or inspection of mid-rise timber construction.

This seminar will proceed as follows:
